Rosie Perez
Rosie Perez (born Rosa Maria Perez on the 6th of September 1964) is an American actress, choreographer as well as a dancer and activist. Her first big break came from her role as Tina in the film Do the Right Thing (1989), which was followed by White Men Can't Jump (1992). Perez's performance as Tina in Fearless (1993) earned her nomination for the Academy Award, Best Supporting Actress as well as other awards. It Could Happen to You (1994) and The Road to El Dorado(2000) and Pineapple Express(8) and Birds of Prey(2020) are some of her most recognizable films.
Perez has received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations (in 1990-1994) and an Emmy Award nomination for her role as The Flight Attendant (2020-2024). Perez has been in Broadway stage plays like The Ritz and Frankie, Johnny in the Clair de Lune and Fish in the Dark. She also co-hosted on the ABC talk show The View during the series in the 18th season.
Childhood and early life
Perez was born in Brooklyn's Bushwick on the 6th of September 1964. She was married to Lydia Perez, a merchant maritime seaman, and Ismael Serano. [3][4][5] Perez's mother Lydia Fontanez y Reyes was born in Humacao (Puerto Rico) on October 13, 1939. Her father came from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Her mother was married to a man twenty years her senior, Arturo Perez. Following an affair with Serrano's father Perez's mother had five children. Perez was born at the now-closed Greenpoint Hospital located in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Perez is one of her ten children. Rosie as well as her siblings were raised in Bushwick in the midst of a slum, where their mother was detained for indefinitely long periods. While in prison, her mother gave birth to her first daughter. She was being cared for by an aunt as with her siblings, went through foster homes and group homes. Her siblings and she were often split. She was placed in an institution for foster children, and was in foster care in New York until she reached the age of eight. She was legally considered an ward of State of New York until age twelve. Aunts and her mother often visited her, while her father was unsuccessful in a custody claim at one time.
